What is hydrotherapy?
Sometimes people find it difficult to exercise in the gym or on dry land because the resistive weight of their own body is too great. Hydrotherapy, or the progression of exercise or movement in water, allows the joints to move more freely as they are supported by the uplift effect of the water. This support helps to reduce the weight of the body, giving enormous benefit in the rehabilitation of arm, leg and spinal problems.
Water can also be used for its resistive qualities and hydrotherapy is an ideal medium for improving the strength of specific muscle groups and reducing muscle imbalance. Many exercises can be performed and progressed at a much earlier stage in a pool setting than on 'dry land'.
Who can benefit from Hydrotherapy?
Individuals who find it difficult or painful to move freely or without support are proven to benefit greatly from hydrotherapy. Many conditions can be effectively treated using hydrotherapy techniques and include:
- Stiff or painful joints
- Osteo Arthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Joint replacement rehabilitation (when wound has healed)
- Acute and chronic back pain
- Multiple joint problems following injury or accident
- Muscle imbalance due to pain, stiffness or injury
- Weak muscle groupings
Hydrotherapy is a great alternative to gym work for improving strength, co-ordination and movement, even for individuals who are not experiencing pain or stiffness.
If you are unsure and want to know whether hydrotherapy can help you, please contact the clinic.
Hydrotherapy Assessment
It is important for your safety and well being that you undergo a Hydro Assessment, prior to starting a course of hydrotherapy treatment in the pool. This is to ascertain your fitness level and suitability for hydrotherapy and is also used to discuss and set goals for your hydrotherapy sessions. During this assessment the physiotherapist will determine if hydrotherapy is the most suitable treatment for your problem. This Hydro Assessment is mandatory for all of our patients.
The Hydro Assessment lasts for 45 minutes. It is a dry land medical assessment by the Hydro Physiotherapist, with no pool work and will be followed by an introduction to LA Fitness facilities including a tour of Pool, Changing areas, Gym and rest of club. This session will assess your suitability for hydrotherapy and also set objective and subjective markers for your pool sessions.
Hydrotherapy Treatments
Rugby Physiotherapy has teamed up with LA Fitness to offer you hydrotherapy treatments on either a group or individual basis.
Individual Hydro Treatments
Each treatment will be tailored to your individual needs and will consist of a 30 minute appointment with the Hydro Physiotherapist. You will meet your Hydro Physiotherapist at the pool side where you are able to update them on your progress since last treatment. Your session will continue in the pool with a one to one hydrotherapy treatment together with individually supervised exercise. Your final Hydro session will include a discharge assessment, where the Hydro Physiotherapist will review and check your exercise techniques to see how you have met your overall treatment goals. The Hydro Physiotherapist will update your notes which will include an appropriate discharge letter to GP or consultant. (Your session time will include a few minutes for the Physiotherapist to change should they not be continuing in the pool).
Group Hydro treatments ( up to max of 6 people)
Please note that you must have undergone an individual dry land Hydro Assessment prior to starting the Group Hydro sessions.
Rugby Physiotherapy has developed a low cost hydrotherapy package, which allows us to tailor hydrotherapy sessions to your individual needs whilst also keeping the price low. The package comprises of 4 x 30 minutes hydrotherapy sessions in the pool with 3 to 5 other individuals and is offered at a special discount price.
After arriving at LA Fitness and changing you will meet your Hydro Physiotherapist at pool side at the time of your appointment. The Group Hydro treatment will include time for you to update the physiotherapist on your progress since the last session followed by supervised exercise specific to your needs in the pool. Your final Hydro session will include a discharge assessment where the Hydro Physiotherapist will review and check your exercise techniques to see how you have met your overall treatment goals. The Hydro Physiotherapist will update your notes which will include an appropriate discharge letter to GP or consultant. (Your session time will include a few minutes for the Physiotherapist to change should they not be continuing in the pool).
What is the cost?
We have worked hard to bring you a quality hydrotherapy service at a reasonable cost and are able to provide private or group hydrotherapy treatments in a separated area of the main pool at LA Fitness.
If you have medical insurance, then hydrotherapy is usually covered, but please check with your
individual insurer.
Please contact clinic on
01788 565044 or
07961 378418
for current fees.
**Payment for the Group Hydro treatment package must be made in advance by cash or cheque. Any advance cheque payment will only be cashed after your Group Hydro session has commenced.
Booking of Appointments
Individual Hydro Assessments and Individual Hydro treatments can be booked at a time which suits you, please discuss with one of our Physiotherapists or contact our receptionist on 01788 565044 to arrange.
Group Hydro sessions are held on fixed dates. They must be booked as a continuous block of 4 treatments over a 4 week period (1 per week), and payment must be received before your Group Hydro sessions start. For details about the start date of the next Group Hydro session and the weekly session timings, please discuss with the Hydro Physiotherapist during the Hydro assessment or contact reception on 01788 565044.
Cancelled appointments
Our standard cancellation policy applies for all individual Hydro Assessments and Treatments. We will charge a full fee for any appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice. We always try to fill your appointment should you have to cancel at short notice, and if successful we will be glad to waive the cancellation fee.
For the Group Hydro sessions we are able to keep the cost low by guaranteeing your attendance and we give a large discount for booking and paying for 4 x Group Hydro treatments in advance. Unfortunately, this means that we will have to make a full charge for any cancelled appointment regardless of the notice given or the reason for cancellation.
Please ensure that you are able to attend all the fixed dates of the Group Hydro sessions prior to booking.
Important Information
After each hydrotherapy session it is important to let your body re-adjust before leaving the building. Ensure that you take at least 10 - 15 minutes to rehydrate with a drink (non-alcoholic!) and to relax after the session.
If you need any assistance to change or help to get to the poolside, your escort needs to be the same sex as yourself, as there are no mixed changing areas at LA Fitness.
The Hydro Assessment is mandatory for all of our patients, and must be taken prior to booking any individual or group hydrotherapy treatment sessions.
What to bring with you
For your initial Hydro Assessment, you should bring shorts and tee shirt.
For Hydro Treatments, you should bring a bathing costume, towel and a dressing gown or additional towel to keep you warm when entering and exiting the pool area.
For those not on medical insurance, don't forget to bring cash or your cheque book to your Hydro assessment. Please remember that if you are planning to book on to the Group Hydro sessions, we will also require pre-payment for these sessions at this time.
